At Kents Hill Junior School, Spanish is taught in one of our fantastic short courses which allow all children from Year 3 through to Year 6 to learn a new language.
The lessons are taught by our specialist teacher, who is a Spanish native, which enables the correct pronunciation to be modelled at every opportunity. Children cover a range of subjects ranging from colours, days of the week and clothes in Lower School to directions, transport and weather in Upper School. Each unit of work teaches the children the vocabulary needed to complete a final project where they will need to draw upon what they have learnt. Children are able to make rapid progress within lessons due to the organisation of the short course which allows pupils to rehearse, refine and apply their learning on a daily basis.
Due to the nature of the short course, children are exposed to the culture of Spain, allowing them to see similarities and differences between their own culture and Spain’s.
Spanish is also integrated in to part of the daily routine. For example we use Spanish labels in all classrooms and pupils respond to the dinner register in Spanish.
