Curriculum

At Kents Hill Junior School, we follow the CUSP programmes of study for science, history, geography, music, French, art and design and design and technology. CUSP is ambitious and infused with evidence-led practice and planned to ensure the long-term retention of knowledge.

Kents Hill strives to deliver a high quality, broad and balanced curriculum that meets the needs of all our children. We deliver a dynamic curriculum that is meaningful and engaging, designed to provide each of our children with the opportunity to experience a diverse range of rich experiences and enable them to explore their skills, try new things and release their passions.

We design our curriculum to support and encourage all our learners to be aware of their community and passionate about making a positive difference to the world around them.

During their time with us, our children will experience many exciting and unique learning opportunities from visits and visitors, themed events, and completing their “50 things to do before you leave KHJS” challenge.

During our Portals to the Past workshop, I enjoyed exploring the different artefacts linked to WW2. I found it interesting that the money was different to how it is today.

We pride ourselves on our bespoke curriculum which harnesses the unique opportunities we have established at KHJS. Within this, our curriculum is specifically designed to build knowledge and skills over time that will stay in the hearts and minds of our children forever. The children’s books will stay with them throughout their time at the school allowing them to go back across the years to revisit learning from previous years.

The quizzes we complete at the end of the lesson helps us to remember more and recap back on what we have learnt.

The history lessons in this curriculum have been fantastic. Learning all about Ancient Greece and the Mayans has been so interesting!

The new vocabulary that we learn is challenging and learning it helps us to use it in other places not just our lessons in school.

Our curriculum aims to support children by:

  • Increase the exposure the children have towards high level vocabulary and give opportunities to practise using these words to improve oracy.
  • A curriculum that improves knowledge of the world, building upon what the children know to create new links.
  • Improve the relationships that the children have with each other, building skills and abilities to work together.

Long-term plans have been created so that subject coverage is planned sequentially and with a clear rationale for making connections with prior learning, therefore learning is blended and refined.

When my children come home, one thing that really impresses me is their vocabulary. Some of the vocabulary they use is so much more advanced than I would have expected!
