Young Carers

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting pupils’ wellbeing, we are working to better understand which children across the whole school may benefit from additional pastoral support. One area we are currently developing is our support for young carers, and we would like to invite families to help us identify pupils who may benefit.

We recognise that the term “Young Carer” can sometimes feel confronting or may not feel like an accurate description for every family. It is simply the term used by local authorities to describe children who may be affected by helping to look after or support someone at home.

A young carer is any child or young person who helps to support a family member who may have an illness, disability, mental health need, or additional support requirement. This support can be practical or emotional. For example, children may: provide emotional reassurance, help care for siblings or experience worry or responsibility linked to a family member’s needs. This may include families where someone has conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, physical health needs, or mental health challenges.

Many children and families do not immediately identify with the term, but letting us know helps school staff provide appropriate understanding, flexibility, and support where needed.

Young Carers Club

Mrs Davis and Miss Burling run a Young Carers after-school club on Tuesdays from 3:20 pm – 4:20 pm. The club is shaped by the children themselves and is intended to be a relaxed, enjoyable space where pupils can spend time with peers who may have similar experiences. Activities across the sessions include: den building, jewellery making, origami, dodgeball, smoothie making, Blooket quizzes, board games etc. We also offer optional 1:1 check-ins during sessions, giving children a safe space to talk if they wish. All conversations are child-led and entirely optional.

If you think your child may be a young carer and you would like to discuss this further, please contact the school office.

Thank you for your support in helping us ensure every child receives the understanding and care they may need.
