Personal Development
At Kents Hill Junior School, we are committed to nurturing every child’s social awareness, strength of character, respect for others, and academic confidence. Personal Development is not an add-on; it is embedded in every aspect of school life—through daily interactions, lessons, events and assemblies. Our aim is to prepare pupils for life beyond primary school, equipping them with a strong sense of purpose and belonging and the confidence to express their views with clarity and respect.
Personal Development is a core element of our curriculum. Through our school values, PSHE and RE lessons and assemblies, pupils learn to become respectful and responsible citizens who understand and appreciate British values and the diversity within their community. We encourage children to conduct themselves with courtesy and consideration, to reflect on their behaviour and to work cooperatively with others across the school.
We place great importance on pupils’ wellbeing. We ensure that children feel safe, secure, and supported, while helping them to understand their emotions and know where to seek help when needed. From Year 3 onwards, we foster independence so that pupils develop essential life skills, including maintaining their physical and mental health, staying safe (including online), and making informed choices about nutrition.
Pupils’ moral, social, and cultural development is enriched through a wide range of curriculum experiences alongside visits and workshops. These opportunities are designed to broaden pupils’ horizons and enhance their cultural capital.
Beyond the classroom, we offer a diverse range of opportunities that enable pupils to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build character. These include:
- Clubs: A variety of activities such as sports, choir, art, crochet, and book club.
- Leadership and Responsibility: Roles including school council representatives and prefects.
- Community Engagement: Charity initiatives, volunteering, and local partnerships, including our dedicated ‘Community Week’.
- Cultural and Global Awareness: Enrichment days, educational visits, and activities that celebrate diversity and broaden perspectives.
- Careers and Aspirations: Workshops and visitors that inspire future ambitions.
We are dedicated to ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to discover their interests, develop resilience and grow in confidence, both academically and personally.
At the heart of our enrichment programme is the belief that every child should leave Kents Hill Junior School not only with strong academic foundations, but also with the skills, values, and experiences needed to lead fulfilling lives and contribute positively to society.
