We Are Global Citizens
At Kents Hill Junior School, a high quality PSHE education will teach our pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain.
Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education at Kents Hill Junior School. We use the PSHE associations recommended programme of study, the JIGSAW scheme of work.
Through this programme, crucial skills and positive attitudes are developed through comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE), ensuring children are effective learners. These skills and attitudes are imperative in unlocking pupils' potential, helping to raise achievement and closing the gap in educational attainment. A combination of JIGSAW and Colours/Zones of Regulation provide a whole-school approach to building these essential foundations – crucial for children to achieve their best, academically and socially.
RSE within PSHE
As part of your child’s educational experience at Kents Hill Junior School, we are committed to promoting the health and well-being of our pupils. In an ever-changing world, children need to develop an understanding of themselves, others and their community and how we can work together in harmony. They also need to know how to maintain healthy lifestyles and relationships with others.
Please find below documents to support the parent consultation:
As you will be aware from our consultation period with parents in March 2021 which has now closed, the Department for Education has announced changes to relationships and sex education following nationwide consultation. These changes will come into effect from Summer 2021 and all schools will be required to comply with the updated requirements. At Kents Hill Junior School, we were early adopters of this update and we have already been teaching RSE (through our Health and Relationships Education) and have a comprehensive curriculum in place.
At Kents Hill Junior School, we believe it is essential that pupils’ experience of PSHE education is not simply a series of ‘one-off’, disconnected sessions each on a different topic and focussing only on factual content. We therefore prioritise within each theme above the topic areas that are most relevant to our pupils’, these then provide a context for our pupils to both broaden and deepen their understanding of the key concepts and to develop the essential skills and attributes needed to become citizens of the wider world. It is important that pupils recognise their PSHE education as relevant and can see how the skills acquired through looking at one issue can be transferrable to other contexts.
We follow the Zones of Regulation curriculum to support pupils in consciously regulating their actions and problem solving abilities. The curriculum is designed to help pupils recognise when they are in different states and teaches them strategies or tools to stay in a state of mind or move from one to another. It deepens pupils’ understanding of how to self-regulate.
